Classroom Implementation

If I were to use this moon project in a fourth grade classroom, there are many features that would be beneficial to the students. There are also ways in which I would tweak it to be more accessible to all students.

  • In addition to an online blog that the children could access on their own, I would create a 'concrete' blog chart that the children could contribute to in the classroom. This would allow students without internet access at home to contribute and share their findings with the class. Images could be printed from cameras or drawn depending on the availability to the student.

  • I would also like to collaborate with a classroom in another timezone (preferably several time zones away from ours) to do the project at the same time so that the students could compare what they observe with the observations from a different part of the world.

  • Since this is a project that is largely done from home and at night, I would keep the communication with parents as open as possible. I would make sure that they understand the project and that the moon may be visible only after their child has gone to bed. I might suggest that the parents use getting to see the moon well past bedtime as an occasional incentive. I will also make sure that they know I do not expect the project to step the boundaries of unreasonable requirements.
